2 - Nancy Hayes Bridge Condition

1964 Bridge

The Nancy Hayes Bridge was built in 1964, and replaced the original “Ho-o-den” or Phoenix Pavilion Bridge that was installed at the time of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.

Iron Gates on Bridges

Vandalism has been a documented concern on the Wooded Island since the 1920s. Several years ago, an iron fence was constructed on the north and south bridges to the Wooded Island. While this may seem to provide an additional level of security, it will suffer aesthetically considering the big picture.

In the future, improved lighting as well as security surveillance should eliminate the problems suffered in the past. Other alternative measures to the iron fence on the bridges are being considered.
