2 - Approach to Osaka Gate

A Japanese garden entrance should be inconspicuous so that visitors have to explore, taking into visual details, and figure out how to enter. This rendering reflects the approach that both Uchiyama (2001) and Mitsuhashi (2018-19) recommended. The new path is also located on the historic Olmsted path leading to the front of the Phoenix Pavilion.

Considerations:

  • Replace signage as you cross the Nancy Hayes Bridge.

  • Increase the quality of the materials. Replace the rubble gravel with hand-cut stone.

  • This not only enhances aesthetics, but signals a change is speed and movement.

  • A wisteria trellis or wall becomes another focal point and provides texture and color to attract interest of the visitor.

The Kasuga lantern is the only original artifact from the 1935 garden, and will continue to serve as a reference marker to know where the 1935 and 1980 garden entrance was located, and the garden’s proximity to the Phoenix Pavilion, where SKYLANDING is located today.
