In 2025, the Obama Presidential Center (OPC) will open across the lagoon in Jackson Park from the Garden of the Phoenix. With the opening of the OPC will come a renewed opportunity to discover the beauty of the Garden of the Phoenix and to learn valuable lessons from the US-Japan relationship that are reflected in its 130-year history and highlighted by President Obama's speech during his historic visit to Hiroshima in 2016.

Osaka and Chicago Celebrating 50 Years in the Garden of the Phoenix
On August 3, 2023, two pine trees were planted in the Garden of the Phoenix in Jackson Park to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sister cities relationship between the City of Osaka and the City of Chicago.

Celebrating the Centennial of Wright’s Imperial Hotel (1923-2023) with Cherry Trees at Wright’s Robie House in Hyde Park, Chicago
On July 18, 2023, The Imperial Hotel, Ltd. and the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust celebrated the 100th anniversary of Wright’s 1923 Imperial Hotel, Tokyo, with a private dedication of cherry trees planted in the courtyard of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Frederick C. Robie House, Chicago, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

An introduction to the legacy of the Phoenix Pavilion - from Kakuzo Okakura and Frank Lloyd Wright to Tadao Ando and Yoko Ono. After 130 years, the Garden of the Phoenix has risen and is recognized as one of the most important sites in the nation reflecting the shared commitment by the U.S. and Japan to mutual respect and understanding.

Vision 130 - A Guide to the Future
On March 31, 2023, the 130th Anniversary, the Garden of the Phoenix Foundation published Vision 130 as a guide to inform major improvements in the Garden of the Phoenix, as well as various education, revitalization, and sustainability projects now and in the future.

130 years ago today - The Garden of the Phoenix in Jackson Park, Chicago was established
On Friday, March 31, 1893, the Japanese flag was unfurled at exactly 12 o’clock noon to begin the dedication ceremony for the newly constructed Phoenix Pavilion located on the north end of the 15-acre Wooded Island, which would become the central landscaped area of the World’s Columbian Exposition.
THE FOUNDATION
The Garden of the Phoenix Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that partners with the Chicago Park District and other organizations to ensure that the 1893 commitment to maintain the Garden of the Phoenix as a permanent and extraordinary place for visitors to learn about Japan and experience Japanese culture is fulfilled now and for generations to come.
